Geneva - Switzerland's tennis federation on Tuesday named a youthful and largely untested squad to face Japan in the women's Fed Cup at the end of April.

Sixteen-year-old Timea Bacsinsky, who is ranked 341st in the world, has been picked as captain for the April 22-23 tie in Tokyo, Swiss Tennis said in a statement.

Bacsinsky, who has eight previous Fed Cup matches under her belt, will be joined by unranked Stefanie Voegele, 16, who has played for Switzerland on two occasions.

The two other squad members are both Fed Cup first-timers: 17-year-old Stefania Boffa, the world No 771, and Nicole Riner, 15.
'They are both young, have great potential for development'
"They are both young, have great potential for development and are determined to make their mark on the professional circuit," said head coach Ivo Werner.

Former world No 1 and current No 25 Martina Hingis, plus Patty Schnyder, who is currently ranked ninth, had both earlier turned down an invitation to join the squad.

Tennis said it would continue efforts to persuade them to take part in the Fed Cup playoffs in July. - Sapa-AFP
